Six Manchester United Players Get England Call
Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley,
Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been named in the England squad for
two forthcoming friendly internationals.
Roy Hodgson has called up 28 players for the games against Chile, on Friday 15 November, and Germany the following Tuesday. Welbeck
and Rooney completed both of England's World Cup qualifiers in October,
while Carrick and Smalling also started in the second, the win over
Poland that sealed qualification for the World Cup in Brazil next year.
Scoring
against both Poland and Montenegro put Rooney onto a total of 38 goals
for his country, fifth in England's all-time list and 11 behind rankings
leader and United legend Sir Bobby Charlton. Both England's
opponents have also qualified for next year's tournament in Brazil, and
while England have not faced Chile since 1998, it is just over three
years since Germany knocked Fabio Capello's side knocked out of the last
World Cup.
England squad: Fraser Forster, Joe
Hart, John Ruddy, Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Kieran
Gibbs, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Kyle
Walker, Ross Barkley, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Steven Gerrard,
Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Andros
Townsend, Jack Wilshere, Jermain Defoe, Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez,
Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck.
Wilfried Zaha and
Michael Keane have got the nod for England's Under 21 qualifiers against
Finland and San Marino. Jesse Lingard and Nick Powell, on loan at
Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic respectively, have also caught the
eye of recently-installed England U21 coach Gareth Southgate.
