The 20-year-old Uruguayan is joining from Atlético Peñarol after a successful trial. United's website did not disclose the fee but Peñarol's treasurer, Rodolfo Catino, has said the deal is worth up to €2.8m (£2.4m).

Moyes, who has replaced the retired Sir Alex Ferguson, will be able to view Varela in action immediately at the Under-20 world championships, which take place in Turkey from 21 June to 13 July.

Varela has nine Under-20 caps but has played only one senior game for Peñarol, whose coach, Jorge da Silva, has said: "This is what he deserves. It is a shame to see him go but you can't deny him the opportunity to join a club like this."
