Robin van Persie scores twice as United wins their 20th Community Shield trophy |
It was a
record 16th triumph for the Reds in the traditional curtain-raiser of
the season and the perfect way for Moyes to kick off his tenure. Last
season’s golden boot winner Robin van Persie took just six minutes to
get off the mark for the new campaign with a superb headed finish from
14 yards, after being found by Patrice Evra’s floated cross from the
left.
Chances were few and far between in the first period
thereafter although Danny Welbeck was denied by a good reaction save
from Scott Carson just before the break after a lovely turn and shot. Carson
could do nothing about van Persie’s and United’s second on 59 minutes
which effectively ended the game as a contest. A nice passing move
involving Evra, Cleverley and Welbeck ended with van Persie finding the
net after his shot on the turn took a large deflection off James Perch.
It
was a deserved victory for the Reds who were always in control against
the Championship side who rarely threatened. United fans will hope
this is the first of many trophies to come, this season and beyond.
