Rio Ferdinand enjoyed a special night at Old
Trafford – even if his testimonial match for Manchester United against
Sevilla ended in disappointment.
The long-serving Reds
centre-back played 80 minutes of a lively match against the Spanish
outfit, before leaving the field to a standing ovation. At that
time, United were chasing an equaliser after Antonio Valencia had
brought the hosts back into the game following two first-half Sevilla
goals. But the visitors, for whom Vitolo and Marko Marin scored
before the break, sealed victory in stoppage time through Bryan Rabello
as David Moyes’ first Old Trafford match ended in defeat.
Rio’s
friends, tennis legend Boris Becker, magician Dynamo and rapper Tinchy
Stryder, were among the tens of thousands who came out to honour
Ferdinand’s decade of service in the red shirt.
